China is the world's largest container manufacturer. It increased its production of dry cargo containers by as much as 235% year on year. The production of refrigerators doubled to around 260,000 TEU.
Drewry expects year-round production of new containers to reach 5.2 million TEUs this year, up 67% from 2020.
So far, the main buyers of containers have been lessors- as many as 68% of all new containers. However, experts at Drewry expect shipowners to invest more and more in buying containers to own them. They have had record profits in recent quarters, so they have the funds for this kind of investment.
