EU Introduces Additional Tariffs on Electric Vehicles from China: What Does This Mean for You?

In recent years, RCM has undergone a comprehensive digital transformation, resulting in increased business process efficiency. Despite opposition from some member states, including Slovenia, the European Union has decided to impose additional tariffs on the import of electric vehicles from China. This move will significantly impact the automotive market, both in Europe and in China.

At RCM d.o.o., we are closely monitoring all developments in this area and will continue to inform you about any changes that could affect the import of electric vehicles from China.

Why Additional Tariffs?

After a thorough investigation, the European Commission concluded that Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers benefit from unfair state subsidies, allowing them to offer their products at lower prices in the European market. This is considered to be an unfair competition against European manufacturers.

To protect the European automotive industry, the EU has introduced additional tariffs ranging from 7.8% to 35.3%. These tariffs will significantly increase the cost of Chinese electric vehicles in the European market, which may reduce their competitiveness.

What Are the Consequences?

The introduction of additional tariffs will have several consequences:

  • Higher Prices for Electric Vehicles: Consumers will pay more for Chinese-made electric vehicles, which may decrease interest in these models.
  • Reduced Choice: Some models of electric vehicles from China may no longer be imported to Europe due to higher costs.
  • Encouragement of Domestic Production: The new tariffs are expected to encourage European manufacturers to invest more in the development and production of electric vehicles.
  • Risk of a Trade War: There is a possibility that China will introduce retaliatory measures against European products, which could lead to a trade war between the EU and China.
