It seems the world is once again caught in the grip of a trade war. This time, the main players are the United States, China, and the European Union. While larger EU member states are already calculating potential losses, Slovenia surprisingly finds itself in a favorable position.
According to the Financial Times and Siol.net, the impact of U.S. tariffs on Slovenian exports is expected to be among the smallest in the EU – with an effective tariff rate of less than four percent.
Meanwhile, a true trade ping-pong is playing out on the global stage: China has announced 34% tariffs on imports of U.S. goods, and U.S. President Trump is threatening 50% countermeasures if Beijing does not withdraw its decisions. In response to increasing pressure, the European Commission is also preparing a measure in the form of 25% retaliatory tariffs on certain U.S. products.
What does this mean for Slovenian companies?
Although Slovenia currently appears to be a relative winner in this global tariff game, the reality for many export and import companies is much more complex. Companies importing from the U.S. and China may face:
